5 Ways You & Your Pup Can Help Our Planet

Earth Day is a great time for all of us to stop and evaluate our impact on the environment. A lot can be done to conserve and recycle in your home to reduce your family’s environmental impact, which includes your pet’s environmental pawprint. Read on to learn 5 simple ways you and your pup can team up to help honor our planet on this Earth Day.

1. Recycle Pet Packaging

You may be thinking, what does my dog have to do with recycling? Well, think about all of the packaging that pet food, treats, and toys come in. We encourage you to recycle all of your pet's packaging that you can.

2. Recycle Old Pet Supplies

In addition to recycling pet packaging, you should consider recycling your pet's gently used supplies and toys when it's time to make room for new ones. Many of us often don't consider this option, but there are lots of shelters and rescues that would love to have your gently used pet supplies!

3. Use Eco-Friendly Products

There are a variety of eco-friendly products for pets that you can use. When purchasing new pet supplies, choose biodegradable, all-natural, or recyclable products, if available.

Some examples of more eco-friendly pet products include:

  • Biodegradable poop bags. Not all bags that claim “biodegradable” are, so do some research before choosing.

  • Recyclable or sustainably sourced toys – to start, look for companies that are B-Corp registered.

  • Plant-based cleaning products (some of which come in recyclable packaging)

  • Recyclable containers and pet food packaging

  • Hemp leashes and collars

4. Dispose of Pet Waste

When taking your pet on walks or to the park, make sure you are prepared to properly dispose of your pet’s waste. Before leaving the house, consider bringing a pooper scooper or clipping one of those small recyclable poop bag dispensers to your furry friend’s leash.

When at home clean up droppings around the yard at least once a week. You can either flush them down the toilet or dispose of them in a secured baggie in the trash can. Pet waste composters are also available if you are interested.

5. Take Your Pet for a Walk

Consider stepping outside and enjoying the beautiful weather we have been having. Leave behind the car and get some good, old-fashioned exercise with your pup.
